Jon had his first piano lesson in 1993 from his oldest brother. Since then, he has always loved the instrument. He played in his first band in 2002 and has played in many different bands since then. He studied both classical and jazz piano at CSN in Las Vegas and VCU in Richmond. He received Bachelor of Music degree from VCU in 2014 in jazz piano performance and is working on his degree in music education. He currently plays with the band Nice Couch and can also be seen doing freelance jazz gigs around Virginia. He also occasionally streams music out of his studio on twitch.
Jon began teaching piano lessons in 2004 at a local music store. In 2009 he moved to Richmond and has been teaching full time ever since. After learning the fundamentals, students are encouraged to pick their own songs and/or style that they want to pursue. Some of his former students went on to learn about classical, ragtime, jazz, improvising, playing by ear, and has even had students go on to compose their own music.
Jon began writing music as early as 2005 for the jazz quartet he played in at the time. It began when his piano teacher at the time gave him the simple instructions of "write me a blues tune". After that he has written countless original songs for piano, small jazz ensembles, strings, character pieces, jazz orchestra, and has done 2 soundtracks for animated pieces. While at VCU he took private lessons in composition and arranging. to further develop his skills.
